Personal profile

Research

My research focuses on optimising the treatment of patients in need of mechanical circulatory support during cardiac surgery or intensive care. I am particularly interested in developing advanced monitoring solutions that can optimise and reduce side effects of treatment with extracorporeal circulation. I also work with in-vitro and in-vivo biomechanical characterisation and development of heart valves and related devices.

Profile

Senior researcher in experimental cardiac surgery and extracorporeal circulation with a special interest in characterising, understanding and solving advanced clinical problems.

Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering (2013) and subsequent PhD in Experimental Cardiac Surgery (2017), Aarhus University. In addition, a 2-year specialist programme in Cardiovascular Technology (2022) which together with clinical experience forms the basis for a European EBCP certification as a clinical perfusionist.

Teaching

I teach in extracorporeal circulation and perfusion techniques as well as basic theory in haemodynamic flow characterisation. My theoretical teaching is very much characterised by close contact with the clinic and an understanding of clinical issues. I have also been leading the development of a curriculum for a new master's programme in Cardiovascular Technology (expected start September 2026).

Job responsibilities

Course leader on the courses Clinical Project 1, 2 and 3 offered to Engineering students at Aarhus University.

Member of the scientific committee of the Scandinavian Society for Extracorporeal Circulation (SCANSECT).

Besides research and teaching activities as an Associate Professor at Aarhus University, I work as a Perfusionist at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital. Furthermore, I am the head of the Scandinavian Perfusionist School offered by Aarhus University Hospital.
