My research area comprises naturally occuring and synthetic vitamins, antioxidants and lipids – including quality parameters of feeding fats – of importance for our livestock. The research focus on animal nutrition, but do also include aspects of animal health and quality of the animal food products.

In order to obtain new relevant knowledge within the area of vitamins, antioxidants and lipids, it is necessary to gain basal knowledge of the chemical, biochemical and physiological mechanism concerning:

  • Stability of vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids in feed
  • Absorption in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Transport to organs and milk
  • Metabolism within organs and tissues
  • Function within the body
  • Deposition in organs and tissue
  • Secretion into milk, excreta and tissue

Reliable and fast analytical procedures as well as development and setting up new analytical methods is a very important aspect of the research. The analytical methods comprise analyses of:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
    -  Including separation of stereoisomers of alpha-tocopherol
  • Carotenoids
  • Bile acids
  • Fatty acids
  • CLA isomers
  • FFA, iodine number, peroxid number
  • Glucosinolates
  • In-vitro hydrolysis of tocopheryl and retinyl esters

My main research activities are within the following areas:

  • Content of vitamins in organic produced feed
  • Bioavailability and absorption of different forms of vitamins
    -  Naturally or synthetic
    -  Alcohol or ester bound
  • Biodiscrimination of stereoisomers of alpha-tocopherol
  • Naturally vitamin sources
  • Vitamins for animal health and reproduction
  • Biological activities of carotenes as vitamin A source
  • Fat types and emulgators in relation to digestibility of lipid components
  • Optimising CLA content in milk and meat
  • Sun light as vitamin D source for organic raised animals
