Profile

My research is concentrated on different aspects of nutrition and physiology in monogastric animals with special emphasis on poultry. I work with the nutritional value of different feed ingredients and effect of the carbohydrate fraction on nutrient digestibility and utilisation emphasising the importance of intestinal viscosity and passage rate. The correlation between carbohydrate content and the microbial activity are investigated in som studies. Furthermore, there is focus on studies involving allometric measures (relative growth) of different organs in broilers in order to quantify the degree of imbalance in growth and development in different broiler lines and in relation to different feeding strategies. The research also includes the use of alternative feed ingredients (including different types of forages, such as silages, carrots) and its effect on nutrient digestibility, production parameters and mortality in organic egg-production. I have headed different research projects, the latest being "Improvements in nutrition and health on organic egg-production" funded by DFFE (2001-2004), and I participtate in the DARCOF III project "Quality and Integrity of Organic Eggs, Chicken Meat and Pork (QEMP)" (2007-2009), where I will be responsible for the part of the project connected to the Department of Animal Health and Bioscience.

Competence

Teaching/education/Danida
2008-: For several years I have been involved in teaching students in various poultry courses at KU-Life, and since 2008 I have participated with lectures and practicals in various courses at Aarhus University, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (DJF). Courses: Animal Production, Health and Welfare and Quantitative Animal Nutrition and Physiology. Furthermore, I have been supervisor for at bachelor student from KU-Life connected to the DARCOF III project "Quality and Integrity of Organic Eggs, Chicken Meat and Pork (QEMP)", and I have been co-supervisor for a PhD working with organic egg-production.

2001-: I am involved in teaching of MSc students from different countries (within the framework of Danida: "MSc. Programme in agricultural or veterinary science - with special emphasis on rural poultry production and health"), and in collaboration with the Network for smallholder poultry development, the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen. The subject has been related to nutrition, feed selection by free scavenging poultry and reproduction in poultry. The courses have been carried out at DIAS. From 2004-2005 I have been supervisor for a MSc student from Mozambique, who obtained the MSc degree in April 2005. Thesis: The impact of housing and early nutrition on the productivity of local chickens in Mozambique. In addition, I have been involved in Danida projects in Mozambique, Uganda and Nicaragua.

Membership WPSA
2009-: I have become the chairperson of the European working group No.2 in Poultry Nutrition under WPSA: The World's Poultry Science Association. In addition, I am a member of the Scientific Committee as well as planner of the European Poultry Conference in Tours, France, 2010.

2004-: From 2004 I have been president of the Danish section of the WPSA.

1992-: Since 1992 I have been the Danish member of the European working group Nr. 2. in Poultry Nutrition under WPSA: The World´s Poultry Science Association. There are meetings in the working group each year in connection with different symposia and congresses, and one important purpose of the meetings is to discuss and plan coming European symposia. I participated as WPSA member in the planning of the 11th. Symposium on Poultry Nutrition, which was arranged in Faaborg, Denmark in 1997 in cooperation with the Danish Poultry Council. Further, I am a member of the Scientific Committee as well as planner of the 16th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition in France 2007.

Studies abroad
1991: I stayed four months at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Wageningen Agricultural University, Wageningen, The Netherlands. During the study period I participated in a project, where the influence of oligosaccharides from various sources on some nutritional aspects of ileum fistulated roosters was examined in a series of experiments.
