My dissertation project, titled "Drawing out traces: the visual documentation of Medieval wall paintings in nineteenth-century Denmark," explores the ideological, aesthetic, and epistemic frameworks that conditioned the rediscovery, reception, and restoration of medieval church murals in Denmark in the 1800's. It does so by examining the role that documentary drawings, tracings, and watercolors, made by the artist-restorers who first documented and restored the murals, played in reshaping the murals (and, by extension, Denmark's Medieval artistic heritage) to fit contemporary taste and devotional culture. In order to fully understand the intellectual currents that impacted these processes, the project places the treatment of the wall paintings in Denmark within a trans-national context, studying how Danish archeologists, art historians, and restorers responded to relevant intellectual trends in other European countries.
