Robert Daniel Austin


Robert D. Austin is a professor of Information Systems at Ivey Business School (located at University of Western Ontario, Canada) and an affiliated faculty member at Harvard Medical School.

Before his appointment at Ivey Business School, Robert Austin was a professor of Innovation and Digital Transformation at CBS, and before that - for more than a decade - a professor of Technology and Operations Management at the Harvard Business School. At Harvard, he taught MBA courses related to the Creative Economy, Operations Management, IT Management, and Accounting, and also extensively in Executive Education, in programs ranging from the Advanced Management Program and Owner President's Management Program, to specialized programs for Women Leaders. He also chaired the school’s executive program for Chief Information Officers (CIOs) for more than ten years. He is one of a handful of people who teaches case method teaching to business school faculty members, and over the years he has taught more than 25 seminars in the case method approach to business education to faculty members around the globe.

Robert Austin has published widely, such as Harvard Business Review, Information Systems Research, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Science, and the Wall Street Journal. He is the author of nine books and more than 50 published cases and notes, two Harvard online products, and two popular Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) running on the Coursera platform.

Over the years, Robert Austin has consulted and delivered education experiences and consulting to many multinational corporations, and he has served on numerous boards, especially for technology companies. He is a member of the international jury for the CIO 100 Awards, which selects for recognition the best examples of IT projects the "[create] new business value by innovating with technology" and he has advised the European Commission on "e-Competencies for Innovation" and "e-Leadership".

Robert Austin will join our department as an affiliated professor from January 2018.
