Online hotseat tutorials: students as partners in supervision collectives

We present a design-based research experiment for developing a pedagogical format for supervision collectives called ’online hotseat tutorials.’ The format has been developed and tested within the MA Programme ICT-based educational design, Aarhus University 2014-2018. It has affinity to traditional forms of team-based supervision but is particular in the way it utilizes potentials of video-conferencing to underline joint dialogue, partnership and communality in the relation between students and teachers. The technological setup of the format supports students in assuming co-partnership roles that are different to more traditional forms of peer-to peer feedback or student-teacher supervision. Emerging from the format we see new forms of partnership between students and between students and teachers due to intentional leveraging of media potentials to promote different arenas for student participation. On the grounds of the developed pedagogical format, students elicit advanced academic competences such as being facilitators of critical dialogue, exhibiting knowledge stewardship, and taking on responsibility of relationship formation between students. These are traits we normally see only teachers and supervisors exhibit.

The presentation begins by placing the design experiment within the larger context of research into online supervision and peer feedback. Then we describe the design-based research framework that envelops and directs the study. Also, the developed three-tier media ecology and set-up as well as the pedagogical intentions behind it is presented. Finally, we analyse the emerging forms of partnership within online hot seat tutorials, and we discuss the pedagogical implications for how to further inform, qualify and develop pedagogical formats for team-based supervision in higher education online environments.
