Renee obtained her PhD in 2013 from the University of Amsterdam and promptly moved across the world to do research in Melbourne. In 2018 she returned to Europe to work in Denmark at the University of Aarhus. Throughout her career Renee focusses her research on 1) how HIV establishes a latent infection in CD4+ T cells, and thereby evades detection by the immune system, 2) how the interaction of infected cells with other immune cells, particularly dendritic cells, affect virus expression and finally, 3) how the immune system can be manipulated to ultimately eliminate HIV infected cells from the infected individual to facilitate virus remission so that antiviral therapy may be stopped.
