Strategic corporate sustainability: Towards an integrated strategy typology

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperResearchpeer-review

This paper aims to advance the understanding of the circumstances under which corporate sustainability (CS) pays off. On the basis of a review of 129 major papers from both the sustainability and general management literature, we discuss the development of the research field. In addition we discuss in detail 7 existing typologies that address the strategic role of CS. We conclude that existing typologies lack two elements: (1) the integration of the strategic intent to create value from CS, and (2) elements that allow evaluating the impact of different CS strategies on the relationship between antecedents and outcomes. To overcome this limitation we propose an integrated typology which may facilitate more research on the link between corporate sustainability performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP). Our expectation is that the strategy type might play a moderating or mediating role in this relationship.
