abstract = "International studies have demonstrated that well-functioning primary health care organized around family and community health teams is adamant in establishing a cost-effective health system that provides equitable and accessible health services to the entire population. The World Health Report 2008 (PHC Now more than ever) urged health systems worldwide to make a shift to more comprehensive health care. Family and community medicine training is developing in Sub-Saharan Africa but in many countries there still is a long way to go. With a network linking the different training programs in African universities synergies can be established and training programs can get stronger with good quality assurance. With South-South cooperation the partners share experiences and resources and therefore improve the development of the training. Research into the effects on health and civil society of these efforts are equally necessary to provide innovation and documentation to sustain the continuous recruitment of political support, funding and human resources in this quest to construct adequate health services. Examples of already established collaborations within an existing network and the various outcomes with respect to curriculum development, institutional strengthening and advocacy will be presented and new ideas to incorporate research based initiatives will be shared.",
