Profile

I am a soil microbial ecologist using combinations of advanced methods including different kinds of PCR, sequencing, the use of fluorescent probes, microscopy and bio-informatics.

My research is focused on the occurrence, spread, population structures and activity of bacteria in the environment, especially bacteria possessing pathogenic abilities and members of the genus Bacillus. In this relation are interactions with humans as well as invertebrates in focus. This research is used for risk assessment of the use of microbes and genetically modified organisms in the environment. Another focus is related to the importance of microorganisms for ecosystem services and soil quality as evidenced by their enzymatic activities, functionality and diversity. Additionally is the aerial spread of microorganisms, notably from barns, by air investigated.
