Mette Krogh Christensen

PhD, Associate professor

I am Associate Professor at Centre for Educational Development, Aarhus University. My background is a master in human and social science of sport and pedagogy (1995) and a PhD in faculty development in Physical Education (2001), both at Copenhagen University, Denmark.

My passion is to explore, support and provide professional development and identity among students and teachers in the field of health sciences education. My research interests and expertise revolve around situational, social and cultural aspects of teaching and learning in higher education, as well as faculty development and educational development in the fields of health sciences education and their professions. In particular, I am engaged in exploring the process of developing and changing professional identities and professionalism among teachers and supervisors in higher education.

Pedagogically, I am rooted in John Dewey’s pragmatic educational theories about experiential education. Methodologically, my research includes qualitative research interviews, expert interviews, biographical narratives and focus group interviews in combination with questionnaires and passive participant observation. Theoretically, my expertise is within practice theory, where some of my favourite sources of inspiration are sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and educational theorist Etienne Wenger.

So far, I have published more than 50 international and national peer-reviewed papers, supervised 12 PhD students and more than 20 master students, and participated in 9 international PhD assessment committees. I am vice-chair of the Danish Network for Educational Development in Higher Education (2014-present).

In addition to research, I am a highly experienced educator with expertise in the areas of faculty development, curriculum development in health sciences educations, doctoral supervision, team-based learning, educational theory, talent development, and qualitative research methods. Currently, I run supervisor courses for PhD supervisors, courses in teaching and learning for PhD students and assistant professors, a variety of faculty development workshops and a facilitated multisource feedback programme for experienced higher education teachers.
