Critical Perspectives on Agency and Social Justice in Transitions and Career Development

Research output: Contribution to journal/Conference contribution in journal/Contribution to newspaperJournal articleResearchpeer-review

This editorial introduces the special issue on critical perspectives on agency and social justice in transitions and career development. While there is a long tradition of using critical theory in career research, there have been limited attempts to view this tradition collectively or consider its impact on, and potential for, shaping career theory. The editorial defines critical theory broadly, moving beyond a narrow focus on theorists around the Frankfurt school and instead embracing writing informed by Marxist theory, poststructuralism, feminism, and other critical traditions which creates a radical imaginary, attends to power, unmasks ideology, understands individuals to be in a dialectical relationship with context and views human beings as having a bounded but transformative agency. The editorial then introduces 13 articles which it groups under the categories of critical psychologies, relational sociologies and postmodern discourse theories.
