I am a trained social anthropologist from University of Copenhagen (M.Sc. 1996, PhD 2002) and have since 2003 been employed at the Danish School of Education. My primary research interest is currently on the role of education, formal as well as informal, in interrelated processes of geographical and social mobility. Most of my work is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in (and in relation to) South Asia and includes projects on the relationship between mass-schooling, nation-building and educational strategies among the urban poor in Nepal; the role of education in youth migration from Nepal to India in a post-conflict context; contemporary practices of student migration from Nepal to Denmark; and financing of public education in Nepal. At the moment I am also engaged in an interdisciplinary, Danida-funded research project, Antimicrobial Resistance and Labour Migration across Healthcare Boundaries in Northern South Asia (AMR@LAB), headed by Professor Jens Seeberg, Aarhus University and funded by the Novo Nordic Foundation. Moreover my research engagement has also included participation in research capacity building projects in Nepal.
In addition to teaching and supervising at the two Master programs, Pedagogical Anthropology and Anthropology of Education and Globalisation, I am the director of the PhD program Learning and Education.
