Numerical modeling of three-body abrasive wear

Project description:

Grundfos is a global leader in advanced pump solutions and water technology, where they develop and manufacture pumps for different applications around the world. In this industry, wear is a long-term threat to the lifetime of pumps, where abrasive particles act as a potential catalyst for erosive wear and unwanted gaps which can lead to pump failure.

Current methods of designing pump components to withstand wear involves time-consuming and expensive accelerated tests  with limited transferability for new designs and products. The use of computer simulations to predict the degree of wear in pump systems would thus be an additional asset to Grundfos’ design process.

The aim of this project is to understand the process of three-body wear using a systematic set of advanced computer simulations and validating experiments, as well as developing a physics-based model to predict the degree of surface wear.
