Profile

Research into methods for livestock herd management with a focus on herd health, welfare, biosecurity and production. Research includes animal welfare assessments at herd level and production and health management in conventional and organic livestock herds. I develop and performs research-based education and consultancy within the research field.

Research

Research into methods for livestock herd management with a focus on herd health, welfare, biosecurity and production. Research includes animal welfare assessments at herd level and production and health management in conventional and organic livestock herds.

Author on 506 publications including 113 publications in peer reviewed journals (18 as first author and 56 as last author).

Invited lectures at or organizer for 20 international scientific conferences

International networks: (i). Research residences six month at University of Edinburgh in 1985, University of Minnesota 4 month in 1989. University of British Colombia Canada 3 month in 2009. (ii) Short visits to Cornell University USA, Cambridge University, UK, University of Guelph, Canada, (iii) Research collaboration in five EU research projects. Participants in First EU Reference Centre for Animal Welfare (EURCAW) from 2018. (iv) Participated in more than 40 international scientific conferences

Innovation, industry collaboration and technology transfer

I have been involved in research and development projects involving commercial companies such as:

•Danish Crown in the project QualityLowInputFood (FP6 2004-07) (responsible for the AU part),
•DeLaval and Aqua-Cleaner in the project [Development of an automatic hoof washer (2008-11)] (project participant) ,
•Lyngsoe Systems in the project Cowtrack (2014-17) (Member of steering committee),
•Them Dairy in the project [Organic milk with more animal welfare 2017] (Project leader)
•Calvex A/S in the project Viable Organic Calves (2014-2018) (Project leader).

I have been a board member of the AU spin-off company Simherd A/S since the company was founded in 2010.

Since 2016, I have coordinated a research-based consultancy service provided by AU to the largest Danish retailer COOP concerning development of a graded animal welfare label on milk, beef, pork, chicken, and egg products.
