Research

Iram Khawaja's research is concerned with three main processes of becoming; identity, community and belonging in regard to specifically constructions of Muslimness and
Otherness. Her doctoral dissertation was based on a qualitative study of young Muslims in religious communities in Copenhagen and her post doctoral research was on Muslim school children and their parents in regard to the Danish public School. She is currently involved in a research project on inclusion and parental involvement in regard to different educational contexts such as the school and kindergarden. In this project the research focus is more broadly aimed at processes of inclusion and exclusion in regard to different notions of citizenship, parental responsibility and community.
Theoretically her research can be placed within the intersections of poststrucuralism, postcolonial theory, socialconstructionism and feminist theory as she draws on and combines diverse traditions and thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Bronwyn Davies, Gilles Deleuze, Flora Anthias and Avtar Brah.
