I teach and research software and computer interfaces as a culture and a means of expression (aka “software studies” and “interface criticism”). Topics I deal with range from e-readers, gaming, smart cites, digital innovation, cloud computing, and much more. But the perspective never changes: my ambition is to bring the knowledge and practices found in the underbelly of digital culture to the fore. This, I believe, will give us a valuable critical and innovative perspective on future technological development.
Background: Software often sustains and automatizes processes of both labor and cultural activities. Algorithms and computation may influence anything from the work-place, self-driving cars to the ways movies, music, games and much more are produced, distributed and consumed. We create software in the image of how we imagine these processes, but at the same time software also affect the ways such processes take place. There may be unintended glitches, transformations that lead to conflicts or repressions, as well as new and innovative excess energies. I research the role of software in these processes through both analytical/theoretical and practical/experimental work.
My upcoming book (co-written with Søren Pold) has the working title: “Metainterface – the art of platforms, cities and clouds” (scheduled for publication in 2017 with MIT Press).
