Pernille's overall research interest lies in the social and cognitive aspects of knowledge creation and innovation. Her current lines of investigation include innovation as social cognition of partial knowledge, including the management of uncertainty, ambiguity and complexity and how to overcome knowledge boundaries. Pernille is also interested in the management of self-managed teams (e.g. R&D teams), in particular in the coordination processes and distributed leadership.

Methodologically, her research includes team and individual levels of analysis. Her research methods include qualitative research (e.g. ethnography) following a process and practice ontology and also lab experiments.
