Curriculum Vitae

My research activities fall within two main areas, which both relate to protein science: 

1) Nanoparticle-Protein and Cells interfaces: Upon exposure to biofluids, NPs acquire a 'protein corona' due to the adherence of host proteins on the NP surface. The composition of the corona is considered to provide NPs with a 'biological' identity that affects their interaction with proteins and their cellular association. To evaluate these interactions, we developed novel methods to characterize protein corona that surrounds Nano objects (nanoparticles, protein fibrils, and oligomers) in the biological milieu and to study how this mediates their interactions with living systems (bacteria, cultured cells, and zebrafish model).

2) Protein Aggregation in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Biofilm Formation: I employ different biophysical and spectroscopic techniques to understand the mechanism behind the effect of plant polyphenols on the fibrillation of proteins and the formation of toxic oligomers. To deliver aggregation inhibitors to the brain, we need to use nanoparticles as drug carriers. Accordingly, I also study the interaction of nanoparticles with proteins and evaluate how this interaction could increase or reduce the fibrillation of proteins and their cytotoxicity.
