Fabio Santos

Associate Professor

Profile

My teaching and research blur the lines between several disciplines and regions. With a formal academic training in sociology, anthropology, as well as history and theory of culture, my work addresses contested memories, spaces, borders, and belongings – in short: inequalities – from a global and intersectional perspective. Prior to joining the Department of Global Studies at the University of Aarhus, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Sociology Chair within the Institute for Latin American Studies of Freie Universität Berlin and held a guest professorship in International Development at the University of Vienna. I am an alumnus of the German-Mexican PhD program “Between Spaces. Movements, Actors and Representations of Globalization”, with FU Berlin being my alma mater and French-Brazilian Amazonia the empirical case that helped me (re)orient shorthand and shortsighted notions such as “Europe” and “Latin America”. As I argue in my forthcoming book, the inequalities at this forgotten external EU border need be understood from the present pasts of colonial conquest and forgetting.
