Inspired by a host of publications on the relevance of working with texts in the foreign language classroom, this article discusses the practical implementation of text-based teaching in German as a foreign language at university level in Denmark. Using the example of the grammatical category 'passive voice' it is shown how language teaching can benefit from the work on and with texts, an approach which helps to overcome the boundaries of traditional grammar teaching, allows for the integration of communicative, cultural, literary, and historical aspects, and accommodates the comeptences of the learners.
