PhD project: Effect of extra substrates on biodegradation of pharmaceuticals in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR)
Department: Department of Environmental Science
Supervisor: Professor Kai Bester
Project term: 01.09.2017 – 31.08.2020
Master’s degree: MSc in Environmental Science, Specialized on fate of emerging contaminations (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, nanomaterials) in soil and aquatic environment, Wuhan University, China.

Pharmaceuticals are frequently detected in natural water and threaten the aquatic environmental quality due to their ecotoxicity. Moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) exhibited good performance on removing pharmaceuticals from wastewater. As the different configurations of MBBR showed distinct removal of pharmaceuticals, the mechanisms involved are still unclear. It is of large interest to understand how substrates in wastewater affect the processes.

This project is going to manipulate the substrates for MBBR in order to improve the removal of pharmaceuticals. Through studying kinetics, enantioselectivity and transformation pathways of pharmaceuticals by using HPLC-MS/MS during degradation in the manipulated MBBR, to evaluate the effects of co-substrates from a comprehensive angle.
