Does Parkinson's Disease start in the brain? Or in the body? Or both?

My work revolves around deciphering the progression of alpha-synuclein pathology, the primary pathophysiology underlying Parkinson's Disease, by studying the gut-brain axis. Parkinson's Disease has been hypothesized to start in the brain (brain-first subtype) or in the body (body-first subtype). I am trying to further establish this distinction between the origin and progression of Lewy Body pathology using post-mortem data from human brains.

Profile

I am a Neuroscience student researcher with a background in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Having worked on exploring the dialogue between the gut microbiome and the brain in India, I hope to utilise my knowledge of molecular biology techniques as well as computational data analysis tools to further our understanding of the gut-brain axis.
