My primary field of interest is what makes us different from each other – Individual Differences. We perceive the world around us in different ways, we have our own preferences in social settings, and we react differently to seemingly identical events. Individual differences pervade our lives whether we are aware of it or not. This is of relevance in many life domains, for example in educational settings where many people spend a significant part of their lives. At all educational levels there are those individuals that flourish and perform well, and there are those individuals that lag behind. Also, it is not completely random which students end up in which academic fields – there are some general differences across academic majors. The relationships between personality traits, educational choices, and academic success have for some years been my primary focus, and it is something that I continue to do research on. But I have also plunged into a new (at least for me) research area where I believe that the individual differences perspective is important; namely in geropsychology. How are individual differences related to well-being and successful aging, and how do psychotherapy with elderly people and individual differences interact? These are some of the questions that I will explore in a new and exciting collaboration between the Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Aarhus University and Center for Livskvalitet [Center for Quality of life] in the Aarhus Municipality.
