Research

My research interest is to understand molecular mechanisms underlying hypoxia tolerance in animals, particularly in vertebrate species able to cope with little or no oxygen in the environment. We integrate classic whole animal physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology to unravel how processes related to oxygen transport and oxygen consumption are regulated at the biochemical and mitochondrial level, including the effect of gaseous signaling molecules H2S, NO and CO2. By studying how animals respond to oxygen limitations in the environment, we provide fundamental mechanistic knowledge to better understand human mitochondrial disfunction and ischemia/reperfusion injury from stroke and heart attack.
