Personal profile

Research

I am conducting research on genome editing and advanced gene therapy with particular focus on the discovery of gene editing systems, engineering Cas proteins with improved activity and specificity, and the development of delivery methods. Using these gene editing solutions, my goal is to develop advanced genetic therapy for patients affected by neuromuscular diseases and cardiometabolic diseases.

Profile

As a professor, I conduct research in genome editing and advanced gene therapy. In my work, I am particularly interested in developing precision gene editing tools like CRISPR and apply these tools to cure human diseases such as neuromuscular disorders, cardiometabolic diseases. I have a degree in bioengineering and biomedicine, and my current roles include principal investigator at the Department of Biomedicine and Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, and affiliated researcher at DANDRITE.

Commissioned

Through my work with DANDRITE and as spokesperson for the affiliated researchers, I provide science-based advice to help promote collaborations at local, national and international levels. I am currently a member of the expert panel for EU COST Action on Genome editing technology for human disease therapy, the internal research consortium FarmGTEx, and the European Innovative Health Initiative project NHPig.

Cooperation and dissemination

I collaborate with many national and international scientists on genome engineering, regenerative medicine, and personalised medicine. The goal is to conduct excellent research and innovation which could not be achieved by a research group alone.

Teaching

I teach genetics and personalised medicine on the bachelor's degree programmes in medicine and odontology, genetics and epigenetics on the master’s degree programme in medicine, and the genome engineering on the PhD degree programme. Using a research-based teaching strategy, my goal is to educate future talents with independent, systemic and critical knowledge and thinking in future medicine. I have also contributed to the development of teaching materials (book) in genome engineering.

Job responsibilities

My primary area of responsibility is conducting independent research in the development of genome editing tools and advanced genetic therapy. I also work with biomarkers discovery using OMICS technologies like single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. I am responsible for teaching the genome engineering for PhD students and contributed to medical student education in genetics and personalised medicine.
