Profile

I conduct research on language and social interaction and have a particular interest in cross-cultural settings and multilingual encounters. I've written about English language teaching, English as a 'lingua franca', second language learning and acquisition, the English language in Denmark, cross-cultural communication, communication strategies, communicative competence, conversation analysis, ethnomethodology, pragmatics, negotiation discourse, family mediation, telephone helplines, and study skills. Recently I've developed an interest in tourist-vendor encounters, price haggling, the use of objects in interaction, the role of spatiality in communication, and the concepts of 'translanguage' and 'semiotic assemblages'. In terms of theory, I'm inspired by ethnomethodology, new materialism, non-representational theory, and post-humanism.
