5 July 2015, a highly decomposed humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) stranded near Stenbjerg, Thy, on the Skagerrak coast of Denmark with a rope snoring about the tail. The necropsy showed that that 10-15 vertebrates were chronically infected. It is therefore likely that the rope infliction eventually turned to be fatal.. This paper discusses the presence of old fishing gear as both an animal welfare problem as well as a threat to individual whales and sometimes entire whale populations.
