My research interests covers broad aspects of biogeochemistry including process studies of the C, S, N cycles and the roles and identity of the biogeochemical players in these cycles.  A particular interest of mine is the so-called “electric ecosystems”.  These are ecosystems where the interactions between the organisms and the environment involves long distance or extra cellular electron transport.  In particular I focus on ecosystems colonized by cable bacteria.  Cable bacteria are long filamentous bacteria of the Desulfobulbaceae family that mediate an electric current, thereby coupling spatially separated redox half-reactions over centimeter scales in sediments. The cable bacteria consortium constitutes a unique ecosystem with unique biogeochemistry, unique microbial composition, and, possibly, novel microbial interactions.

Research areas:

  • Biochemistry
  • Cycles of elements: sulfur, nitrogen, carbon
  • Aquatic microbial ecology
  • Modelling
