This seminar links Technical Communication to action in organizations.   Action offers a means of extending the first stage of preparing a text by including analysis specific to organizational needs and outcomes in workplace settings.  Students will be asked to interview a professional in their field about the kinds of documents they use and the actions related to them.  They will present their findings, and we will use this information as a basis for understanding workplace genres including motivation letters, proposals, feasibility studies and technical reports.  Then we will work in groups to analyze a authentic examples of motivation letters, sharing our findings and synthesizing group findings as a basis for examining the role of genre in organizations.   Finally, we will look at how an understanding of genre as action can help guide your writing choices for selecting and organizing information in stages 2 and 3 of the writing process.
