In the toolbox of modern philosophy strange thought experiments and fictional examples are among the most popular tools. In my talk I will discuss some of the ways philosophers use and misuse examples. Along the way we will meet some of the stock characters of the philosophical imagination, from Descartes’ malicious demon, to the mad scientists of today, from brains in vats to runaway trolleys, from famous violinists with fatal kidney ailments to vampire slayers. Whoever said philosophy had to be boring?
