The digital newsroom – from square to circle

At a time where journalistic production is undergoing rapid change and ever growing competition, so is the room from which the news emerges. As broadcasters visit each other in order to mimic each others’ practices, rooms and technology, a new type of newsroom that has moved from the classical square one, to a round multi media one is now becoming the setting for both national TV news bulletins in both Denmark and the UK.

With this paper we aim to explore this new newsroom and what it means to the journalists in it.

We will seek to answer questions such as; How does the physical room affect the social interactions in it? What does the organisation of people and technology in the newsroom do for the journalistic working process? And which hierarchal structure does the room feed into?

While investigating symbolic and face to face interaction between journalists in and with the newsroom we intend to map out how the setting affects journalistic culture of practice.

Drawing on recent fieldwork at BBC News, DRs TV Avisen and ITV News as well as TV2 Nyhederne, we will investigate this new trend in newsrooms from both Public Broadcasters to more commercial broadcasters in both UK and Denmark. While the main focus will be on the scene of news making, the newsroom, we will also take into account the boundaries of that room, in order to reflect on just where habits and rituals of the room begin and where they end; where the backstage and the front stage of the room meets. This mapping of the space shall bring about an overview of the body of news making, in order to consider it an embodiment of current values and culture of practice within journalism. Thus, we will highlight the advantages of studying the setting, space and place of journalism practice for journalism production studies.
