Spoken/Sung presentation of : "Songs in the Key of Collaboration - engaging with Anthropocene moments through personal and collaborative songwriting."Abstract:
In my PhD I developed co-writing with research participants as an ethnographic research method. Participants had gone through challenging moments in relation to the climate crisis (South Africa) or the Covid-19 pandemic (Denmark), most had no prior experience with songwriting. In this paper I will outline the research methodology and analytical approaches, before reflecting on the potential transformational power of give-and-take-conversations that turned into collaborative songwriting encounters in this research project. Lastly, I will reflect on whether songwriting offers the possibility of transformation solely within the timespan of the songwriting encounter, or whether transformation can happen at several points in time along the journey. From the songwriting moment, over the studio recording process, to the potential release of a single or album, after which a song can engage asynchronously with others, having its own agency and ability to influence listeners.
