Visit by Professor Robert Putnam from Harvard University. Co-organised with "Politologisk Forening and Statsrådet” The event will take place at Per Kirkeby Auditoriet (1250 – 304) on Monday, December 8 at 10:00 am (important: the event starts at 10.00 am sharp). Programme: 10.00-11.00 – Presentation by Professor Putnam 11.00-11.30 – Q&A 11.30-12.00 – Reception with snacks and an opportunity to discuss with Professor Putnam Professor Putnam is regarded as one of the world's most influential social researchers and the leading authority on social capital and has by The London Sunday Times been called “the most influential academic in the world today.” At the event Professor Putnam will be talking about his most recent scientific contribution: ‘Our Kids’. It is a unique opportunity to get an insight in Professor Putnam’s not yet published research. Below is a short introduction to the content of Professor Putnam’s presentation. It’s the American dream: get a good education, work hard, buy a house, and achieve prosperity and success. This is the America we believe in—a nation of opportunity, constrained only by ability and effort. But during the last twenty-five years we have seen a disturbing “opportunity gap” emerge. Americans have always believed in equality of opportunity, the idea that all kids, regardless of their family background, should have a decent chance to improve their lot in life. Now, this central tenet of the American dream seems no longer true or at the least, much less true than it was."
