Otherness and Transgression in Celebrity and Fandom Studies

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in or organisation af a conference

Description

The conference will look at the emerging fields of celebrity studies and fan studies in a new light, through the veil of otherness and transgression. The notions of otherness and transgression play an essential part in the cultural work and practices celebrities and fandoms perform. To the extent that these processes are actively shaped by and partake in shaping our desires, contempt, ways of thinking and being, otherness and transgression constitute pertinent sites for critical exploration within the two overlapping fields of research, Fan and Celebrity Studies. Fan and Celebrity cultures are in need of a reappraisal in which the new fickle and permeable boundaries between identities, cultural practices, private and public spheres, products and consumers, celebrity and fan bodies, intimacy and estrangement are investigated. This conference will bring together scholars to look at the cross-section of these fields, the intersection of their own interests, and hopefully the network of these scholars will form a bridge through which these fields can become more interlinked within scholarship.
