Although the Nordic welfare states have been regarded as forerunners of gender equality, and many structural barriers to women’s participation in the labour market have been addressed, policies continue to discriminate against women and create opportunity costs delimiting women’s career choices. Indeed, policy actors seem to have changed the focus on gender considerably in the last decade. It seems that feminist approaches have been silenced by the growing focus on economic growth as the focus has changed from entrepreneurship being a way to create a more inclusive society to the goal being on the importance of women entrepreneurs for future economic growth. Indeed, policy initiatives do not necessarily contribute to gender equality or change in society. In this first of three workshop we asked questions such as (i) does policy for women’s entrepreneurship really support women? (ii) what consequences do the current gender-neutral policies create? (iii) what should policy for women’s entrepreneurship really aim to support? (iv) how is it possible to address the movement towards post- feminism? 12 individuals from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark participated.
