Social robotics research currently faces a dilemma. On the one hand, there is growing public concern about the socio-cultural and ethical implications of the ubiquitous use of social robots; these concerns will be reflected in national and international legal regulations of the social robotics market. On the other hand, technology development happens at a rapid pace; the robotics research industry cannot afford to wait for results of long-term studies on human-robot interaction. In this talk we present a solution to this dilemma–we present the new method paradigm of “Integrative Social Robotics” which ensures that the products of social robotics comply with or even enhance our socio-cultural and ethical norms and pass expectable future legislation.
