With the (re)emergence of virtue ethics discussions of moral exemplars have once again become an integral part of both empirical moral psychology (Colby & Damon 2013; Walker 1999; 2013) and moral philosophy (Olberding 2008; Zagzebski 2010; 2013; 2017). This paper focuses on an often overlooked aspect of this discussion: the expressive and aesthetic dimension of moral exemplarity. I argue that aesthetic considerations (broadly construed) are both necessary for an adequate understanding of the inherent normativity of moral exemplars and important for understanding the role of narratives in moral life.
