In September 2021, the European Union and the United States committed in Pittsburgh to work together under the newly formed Trade and Technology Council. As part of the Data Governance and Technology Platforms work strand (Working Group 5), the EU and US committed to exchange information on their respective approaches to data governance and technology platform governance, in view of seeking consistency and interoperability where feasible. The EU and the U.S. identified common issues of concern and potential for work towards common approach around: transparency of content moderation measures, algorithmic amplification, and access to platforms' data for researchers.
This joint EU-US research workshop will bring together a group of academic researchers and experts to discuss existing work and gaps, develop a shared understanding of the problem, and share information concerning principles and/or approaches to address these. Around 20 EU and U.S. government representatives will observe the discussion and exchange of perspectives on these issues.
