Plenary lecture which reviews patterns in the development of American diplomacy during the 1970s: from moves to extricate US troops from Vietnam and to reduce the costs of the Cold War, via the unravelling of the detente and trllateral strategies pursued by the Nixon and Carter administrations respectively, to the renewed Cold War stance adopted by the incoming Reagan administration at the start of the following decade.
