Home Economics in the Nordic countries has been a subject in the primary and secondary school and teacher education in 100 years. The Nordic countries have been discussing and developing the subject within the country and in a Nordic association in annual meetings, courses and student exchange. The history has been documented in reports through the 100 years. The last report from 2009 to celebrate the 100 years of Nordic cooperation contains a historical analysis of documents for the last twenty years and a general research of the history. This research show the development of the subject from a female education to a general ‘Bildung' (education) for all. Focus and prioritizations of aims, content, methods, and materials have changed through time and setting. From the introduction period with development of the subject's aims, through a long period where stabilization and refining methods and materials was at the agenda, to a shift towards focus on learning  processes ending up now facing the challenges of the changing globalised societies. The challenges for home economics seen through research of Nordic doctoral thesis involve five essential themes

Gender and equalityHousehold and resource managementMaterial culture as symbol and structureHealth, wellbeing and life qualityCitizenship and democratic understanding
