Abstract

In their Comment, Japsen et al. (2022) argue that the mismatch between offshore late Pliocene-Quaternary sediment volumes and estimates of fjord and valley erosion in western Scandinavia can be explained by the erosion of an extensive onshore sedimentary wedge that existed prior to glaciation. Consequently, they argue that our reconstruction of a similar sedimentary wedge is too small. Japsen et al. make this statement with no attempt to quantify the volume of the more extensive wedge that they consider more realistic. We note that an earlier estimate of such a sedimentary wedge, consistent with the views of Japsen et al., was previously presented by Hall et al. (2013). They found a sediment wedge volume roughly equal to ours, whereas the implications of the two studies differed significantly because of different assumptions on the offshore sink.
