Where is 'it' - Phonetic reduction of the clitic pronoun -ə in Himmerlandsk

Publikation: KonferencebidragKonferenceabstrakt til konferenceForskning

In this presentation, I give a tentative analysis of the patterns of phonetic reduction on the clitic neuter pronoun -ə in Himmerlandsk, a dialect of Danish.

Danish is notorious for its heavy phonetic reduction of /ə/, the Jutlandic dialects in particular. Exploring the phonetic realizations of the clitic pronoun -ə, we find that though it often undergoes phonetic reduction it has a higher tendency to be distinctly pronounced that /ə/ in similar environments in Danish. This might point to a special phonological status of the clitic. I also find, that if we want to understand the phonetic realization of the clitic, we need to look at the interactions between the clitic and it's host, since even when reduced to zero, the clitic helps preserve the phonological integrity of the root preventing some forms of reduction in the root.
