Abstract

A vlog (or video blog) is an online publishing format typically featuring one person addressing an audience through a webcam. The term is a combination of video and weblog, describing both the primary medium of communication and the implied regularity of publishing messages on online platforms for video sharing (e.g., YouTube). Similar to the widely adopted (web) blog format, a vlog can refer to a single, self-authored video message or to an individual’s channel on a sharing platform.
As with blogs, vlogs are frequently updated websites dedicated to a specialized subject presented through one or several individuals (vlogger or vloggers). Video blog functions are today also embedded in popular so- cial networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. This entry provides an overview of the historical development of vlog formats, vlogging platforms, and the visual style of vlogs. It also discusses different uses of vlogs in journalism, public relations, and online marketing, focusing on vloggers as the so-called influ- encers, especially among younger audiences.
