Abstract

Studies have demonstrated that solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy allows identification of the incorporation of guest ions in minor components in the phases of Portland cement clinker. A series of Portland clinkers were prepared with a fixed AlO and SO content where the SO/KO ratio is varied by adjusting the quantities of added CaSO and K2SO. The incorporation of small amounts of phosphorus in anhydrous Portland cement has been studied by P MAS NMR for four commercial cements with bulk phosphorus contents in the range 0.08-0.45 wt.% PO which are typical for production Portland clinkers. Guest ions in anhydrous and hydrated cement phases may become more important in future cement-based materials, following the development of new cement blends including new supplementary cementitious materials and the use of alternative fuel sources in the cement kilns.
