Abstract
Imagining a paradigm for public digitization in which the theories of rites of passage are used as guiding principles for designing public user interfaces, this critique discusses our alternative design for seeking divorce online. As a speculative proposition, it discusses what was perhaps lost in the dream of the fully digitized bureaucracy, and how digitization impacts the cultural and individual experience of major life events. Specifically, the design uses symbols and sensory effects to explore how a transformative event like a divorce might happen if designed with a different set of values.
