N2 - The volume presents a collective and collaborative approach to the philosophy and theory of higher education as a research field its own right as it merges theoretical and conceptual depth, societal and cultural awareness, central study practices and formation trajectories. In the literature, these three elements (idea, society, and formation) are often described separately and with implicit, or explicit, tensions between them. The present volume aims to bridge the gaps between higher education theory, practice, and societal awareness. The volume collects central efforts from the beginnings of the Philosophy and Theory of Higher Education Society (PaTHES) and its two first major academic events: The Philosophy and Theory of Higher Education Conferences ‘The Purpose of the Future University’ (Aarhus University, Denmark, 2017) and ‘Student Being and Becoming in the Future University’ (Middlesex University, London, UK, 2018). Therefore, the volume gathers together the momentum of a new and growing academic movement and international scholarly association. The volume provides a much needed cross-domain approach and perspective on current situations and future possibilities for higher education institutions and programmes. This organically connects the deep meaning of higher education (idea), its societal responsibilities and cultural obligations (society), and reflection on understanding of student formation and curricular framing (formation). The volume applies the term ‘philosophy’ in the broad sense and meaning of the word as, thus, provides a much needed interdisciplinary, but interwoven, analysis and critical discussion of the future of higher education.
