Abstract

This paper introduces K. E. Løgstrup’s thoughts on trust and ethics. It explores Løgstrup’s emphasis on the uncontrollable character of trust through an engagement with central concepts in Løgstrup’s thought, namely the ethical demand and the sovereign expressions of life. While Løgstrup underlines the primacy of good over evil, he seemingly rejects the belief that we as individuals are in control of the goodness we experience in our relation to others; let alone that we should be commended for it. Unlike Hans Fink’s claim that Løgstrup actually presents a deontological ethics, I claim that Løgstrup offers a critical, yet somewhat ambivalent, stance to moral reasoning.
