Abstract
This chapter questions the stability of ‘collective memory’ of global media. Using the case of social media responses to Fédération Internationale de Football Association's (FIFA's) official Russian 2018 World Cup documentary, the chapter finds that public memory of this World Cup is made up of complex webs of often competing narratives and viewpoints which evolve with time. Intervening developments like geopolitical crises serve as a prism that fractures people's reflections and prompts new interpretations. Online engagement with the Russian 2018 World Cup's legacy has been diverse and heterogeneous, noting signs of simultaneously lasting ‘soft power’ and ‘soft disempowerment’ effects.
