Abstract

Against the background of some of the major shifts happening in the news media industry over the last 20 years, this chapter discusses how the industry is increasingly shaped by processes that intertwine the production and circulation of news. While journalists and news institutions to some degree have always related their work to their sources, competitors, and audiences, increasingly the landscape of digital news production, circulation, and usage enforce engagement with a set of new domains, most notably social media users, platforms and algorithms as part of both circulation and text production. As a way to approach this complex and changing digital landscape, this chapter focuses on key changes in the digital constitution of the audience commodity and the news commodity.
